Hong Zao | A Naturally Sweet Nourishing Fruit

Among traditional food and herbal ingredients, Hong Zao is widely recognised for its reddish-brown appearance and naturally sweet flavour. Hong Zao is the mature fruit of the jujube tree. After harvesting and drying, the skin changes from red to reddish-brown and develops natural wrinkles.

The dried fruit has a soft and chewy texture with a naturally sweet flavour. When cut open, the fruit flesh and central seed can be seen. In traditional dietary culture, red dates are widely regarded as a nourishing food ingredient and are commonly used in soups, herbal teas, congee and sweet soups.

Their naturally sweet flavour makes them easy to combine with other herbs and ingredients, and they are often added to formulations to create a more balanced taste. A fruit naturally preserved through drying, retaining its gentle sweetness, has become a familiar nourishing ingredient in traditional food culture.
