Among traditional herbal materials, Bai Zhi is a simple-looking root known for its distinctive fragrance. After the plant matures, its roots are harvested, cleaned and dried to become the Bai Zhi used in traditional herbal preparations.
The root is generally long and cone-shaped, with a greyish-white to light yellowish-brown surface and a firm texture. Its characteristic aroma is one of the features that makes Bai Zhi recognisable in traditional herbal culture.
In traditional herbal practice, Bai Zhi is commonly associated with concepts such as dispelling wind and cold and supporting clear nasal passages. It is also frequently combined with other herbs in traditional formulations.
